Experience and qualifications

Aaron began working in the marine industry in 2005 after starting an apprenticeship as a marine mechanic. His early work included maintaining trailer boats and larger vessels on Sydney Harbour, including Sea Ray share vessels up to 52 feet, Rivieras and high-performance centre consoles.

After helping an acquaintance assess and select a boat, Aaron recognised that buyers often had to choose between a structural survey and a separate mechanical opinion. He completed a Diploma of Marine Surveying and founded BoatBuy in 2015 to bring those two perspectives together.

Inspection specialities

Aaron’s work focuses on pre-purchase marine surveys, mechanical inspections and insurance condition surveys for powered recreational vessels. His inspections commonly cover hull and structure, petrol and diesel engines, cooling and exhaust systems, electrical systems, steering, fuel systems, safety equipment and sea-trial performance where applicable.

His mechanical background is particularly useful when assessing sterndrives, shaft drives, pod-drive installations and outboard-powered vessels. The aim is to explain the condition, significance and likely consequences of each finding in plain language, rather than simply producing a checklist.

How Aaron approaches an inspection

BoatBuy provides inspections and surveys only. It does not sell boats or carry out the repairs it recommends. This helps keep the advice independent and focused on the buyer’s or owner’s decision.

A typical inspection combines a visual and operational assessment with photographs, system checks and a clear report. Where a specialist test, haul-out, oil analysis or further dismantling is required, the report explains that limitation and recommends the appropriate next step.

Service regions

Aaron is based in Sydney and BoatBuy provides mobile inspection services across Sydney, the Gold Coast and Perth, with surveyor availability confirmed for each booking. BoatBuy is currently expanding its team with suitably qualified surveyors and inspectors in Queensland and Western Australia.
